Bonjour tout le monde!
Hope you're having a lovely morning. There's a lot of exciting stuff happening over the next few weeks so do read and get involved!
★ Funky Thursdays @ the pool ★
Don't be a fool and miss the pool, for the next three weeks we'll have tongues in our cheeks: We're spicing up sessions with a plethora of fun boats, including the sexy Topo Duo, coaching from our equally sexy club members and some fun games to finish off! The three week run will climax in the music-filled STAUCC RODEO with prizes for the craziest kayaking skills! At the end of the three weeks you will have: Mad river boat skillz, mad 'hero' skillz, mad freestyle skillz and a guaranteed 6-pack from laughing so much!! All abilities welcome, come and try something new! - Kirstie x
Bingo - this Thursday at the pub!
After the first of our 'Funky Thursday' pool sessions, we'll have StAUCC's first ever, magnificent, Bingo night! Only a pound for 6 games (bargain), with the chance to win some AMAZING prizes, who could possibly refuse? I <3 LM
P.s. If you can't make the (spine tingling) pool session just pop along to the Rule at 10pm!
Deb Pinniger - Fast Waters, Still Moments
This is a talk from one of the most experienced female kayakers in the world today. She has travelled to many incredible places all over the world and is coming to St Andrews to tell us about her adventures in Gabon, Zambia, Montenegro and Iran. It is this Friday (24th) at 7.30pm in Venue 2 of the union. Tickets are £4 and available on the door or from Jonny H at the pub on Thursday. The facebook event has more details. See you there!
Etive Trip
We will be running our annual amazing Etive trip on 3rd March. This river is great fun and suitable for intermediates and beginners who started last semester. The river is situated in the incredible Glen Etive, near Glen Coe, which boasts some fantastic scenery! Here is Jakub's description and album from last year's trip (worth checking out the rest of his website too :P), and a video edited by our very own spr4. This is always a popular trip so email Calum (cf344) to bag your space. If you are unsure about your paddling ability come and chat to him in the pub on Thursday where he will also be doing sign ups.
Open Boat Adventure
This will be happening on the 4th of March and will be exactly as the title describes. We only have limited canoe spaces, so email Calum (cf344) soon to avoid disappointment. If there is a lot of demand we can bring some silly kayaks along as well.
Sense Scotland Charity Rafting - Sunday 25th March
This year our annual event in support of the charity Sense Scotland has a bit of twist - something new for the canoe club - RAFTING!
We will be joining lots of other teams in an official rafting event on the Tay, organised by Sense Scotland. We should be joined by some of our own alumni, BBQ is included and medals if we raft extra fast!
We need teams of 5 to 8 people and it should be A LOT of fun. We have team fundraising targets so we will be getting sponsorship and doing other events to raise money for Sense Scotland. Email me to book your place as soon as possible (or for more info) or find me in the pub! 'Outreach' love, Sarah xx
Club Coach Development Weekend
The 21st to 23rd April is the weekend of the club coach development weekend at Glenmore Lodge. This is an amazing opportunity to get some cheap coaching - see here for what's happening over the 3 days! The AU will be funding at least half of it, so it should be pretty cheap. If you are interested please email Amy (ak632) before Friday because spaces fill up fast! Also let me know if you would like to do Saturday to Sunday or Saturday to Monday. Please note that this weekend is the same weekend as BUCS Polo - be sure not to double book yourselves!
Level 1 Course
We are running a UKCC Level 1 coaching qualification course (including Foundation Safety and Rescue training) from the 2nd to 6th April (second week of spring break). It is a great opportunity to gain some coaching experience and certification, especially if you want to work in the sport. It will be run in St Andrews by Tom Parker and Ian Cave. If you have any questions or are interested and have a 2 star award please email Amy (ak632) soon! there is some more information about the course here.
Bake Sale Apologies
Sorry for all of those who baked or were ready to bake for us! We're were all a bit tired from a weekend of Slalom and another time would be better for maximum effectiveness. The rescheduled bake sale will be sometime in week beginning 12th March - watch this space! Kirstie
New AU Drivers
Please could everyone who has passed their AU test recently email Jamie (jd523), so that we can add you to our list of drivers.
Trip Fees
Please could everyone who has recieved an email from Jon asking them to pay their trip fees find him at the pub and settle their accounts. Merci beaucoup!
Finally, a big thanks to all the tree planters from our chief tree hugger Sarah Duley, we can now officially call ourselves the only carbon neutral sports club!
Canoe Love, Record of the week - An inspiring 485 children in Kolkata
set a new record for the largest gathering of people dressed as Mahatma Gandhi.
