Freshers' 2015

So you want to join Canoe Club??

Or maybe you already have, but you need all that sweet, sweet info that freshers get bombarded with at every turn for at least a week after arriving at Uni...

Well you've come to the right place! Hopefully you will find the answers to all your questions right here, on this very page dedicated to you. That's right, YOU. If not, don't worry - we have a Facebook group and a publicity page for you to check out as well. If THAT doesn't answer everything for you, STILL DON'T PANIC! Feel free to message a member of the committee by clicking the 'Message' or 'Contact us' buttons on the publicity page - we are a distinctly chilled-out and friendly bunch, and we were all new to the club (and the Uni) at one point, so don't be afraid to send us a message. :)

Now then, what do you want to know..?

You want to know what the Canoe Club is.

So it says Canoe on the tin, but in the main, what we mostly do is kayaking! There are certainly chances to do both, so don't worry if a canoe is more your thing! Most of all, don't be intimidated if you've never done anything even remotely like this before - Canoe Club makes sure to provide for all levels of skill, from beginners all the way up to top-notch rapid-chasing adrenaline fiends!

You want to know what the Canoe Club does.

All sorts of things! In the main, practice times are as follows:

Pool sessions: Mondays and Tuesdays from 8.15pm - 9.15pm @ The Madras Pool. Click the link for map - group walks should be arranged in the first few weeks.

These are a great way to get started with kayaking, and to practice essential skills (including rolling) in a warm, heated pool with lots of people to help and instruct you!

Sea sessions: Wednesdays from 2pm until dark, heading out from the East Sands boatshed. Again, we will be around to help you get there at first. :)

This is your chance to get some real kayak practice in, as well as some great fun games of polo, and the occasional pier jump too!

River trips: Weekends! Look out for notices on Facebook and in the weekly email (you'll start receiving it if you sign up to the club) - we run lots of great weekend trips throughout the year; they are always the best opportunity to test your skills and just have a great weekend kayaking with all your mates, so be sure to come along!

The first trip we run is the Freshers Trip (hopefully self-explanatory), which is highly recommended for everyone joining the club - a fantastic first taste of Canoe Club trips!

This is part of a series of other Freshers events we run in the first few weeks, including the Give It A Go sessions (essentially the first few sea-sessions with a heavier focus on introducing freshers to the club), which serve as a very worthwhile introduction, as well as a cracking Freshers Beach Bonfire at the end of Freshers' Week - not only a stunning conclusion to a great week, but also one of the greatest Canoe Club events of all time. Not to be missed.

And you want to know why you should join!

Well, it's true - we can't make you. But (no bias here) we really think you should! Canoe is a fantastic, fun and friendly club* and a great way to get into one of the most awesome sports out there to liven up your days at Uni even more. Come check us out at the Freshers' Sports Fayre and say hi! We look forward to seeing you there, and hope you have a fantastic time here at our wonderful Uni. :D

Get live updates, cool pictures and other fun stuff by friending us on Facebook, following us on Twitter, and subscribing to us onYouTube. Our blog has a write up of past trips, if you want to see the kind of things the club gets up to.
